To continue our review of technical processes related to Post Production and video processing, we will look at using plates that stylize our footage in ways that reflect historical film/video production. Earlier in the semester we looked briefly at creating plates that were had abstract motion. Plates can be used as overlays to stylize the aesthetic of a project. A common example would be a film grain plate that makes something shot on HD Digital Video look more like it was shot 35mm Film Stock. Another example would be footage composited in that looks like light leaking in to a physical camera. The process we will breifly review can be found in a variety of tutorials and sometimes make use of stock footage. Some examples include processes for building your own stock footage and might be related to our BG Plates Assignment. These processes are traditionally done as a last step in compositing.

Project 2 Drafts - Project Share

Following our VFX Project 2 timeline, we will spend some time today in class sharing projects and talking about what each student/group is doing. As we did earlier in the semester, each student/group will have some time to share what they are planning and what they have done at this point. The group will move around the room to various workstations to see what everyone is doing. During the project share time, it is possible for anyone to give feedback, ask questions, make suggestions, and constructively consider how each project might develop.

Project 2 Work Session

The remaining time in class is designated as work time for VFX Project 2. Use our time together in class as much as possible for assistance with some processes, experimenting with film grain etc, shooting footage for VFX, and general project development. You should be in the Production and Post Production part of the project work. Try to keep Production work outide of class time so we can work more efficiently together.

Project development and process is one of the areas that is evaluated in larger projects like this one. Those of students/groups that have not submitted Pre Production materials should do so as soon as possible. Good planning helps to steer project like this in the right direction and informs how you make decisions as you go. Although your project may adjust over time, it is important to plan ahead as much as you can.
