Process Review: Tracking

To continue exploring visual effects processes, we will spend some time reviewing motion tracking today. Our software can be used to track specific points in live action footage and use those to control or move other elements. In visual effects, camera tracking to "match move" from live action is extremely important when working with computer generated images. In order to composite something in, the generated images have to match the live action footage in camera movement, camera angle, lighting, shadows, visual aesthetic, and more. Some of this qualities can be done automitically while others are adjusted manually. There are lots of different ways to do tracking... and depending on what a project calls for, there is usually an appropriate process. In general, it depends on what software you have available to use. Some applications have a straightforward tracking process and others are a little more complex.

  • No real motion tracking in Premiere Pro
  • Workflow would be to do motion tracking in another application
  • In Premiere, can do some work manually: place graphic etc in position and use keyframes
  • Masks can be tracked automatically - Mask Tracking
  • After Effects & Motion Tracking
    • Point Tracking (2D)
      • Can be used for graphic elements (mostly 2D)
      • Very useful for adding compositing simple graphic elements
      • Tracks points in 2D space
    • Camera Tracking (3D)
      • Can be used for 3D graphic elements
      • 3D in AE is challenging, but tracked camera can be exported
      • Typically want to use AE in combination with other 3D software

Project 2 Work Session

The remaining time in class is designated as work time for VFX Project 2. Use our time together in class as much as possible for assistance with some processes, experimenting with tracking, shooting footage for VFX, and general project development. You should be in the Production and Post Production part of the project work. Try to keep Production work outide of class time so we can work more efficiently together.

Next week there will be another critique for your project development. At that time is expected that the majority of students/groups are working on Post Production.

Project development and process is one of the areas that is evaluated in larger projects like this one. Those students/groups that have not submitted Pre Production materials should do so as soon as possible.
