Class 26 - April 26

Project 2 Work Session

This class session is designated as work time for VFX Project 2. Use our time together in class as much as possible for assistance with some processes, experimenting with VFX, shooting footage for VFX, and general project development. Try to keep Production work outide of class time so we can work more efficiently together.

Next week there will be a critique for your project development. At that time is expected that the majority of students/groups are working on Post Production.

Work Session Film Screening

The Wizard of Speed and Time

The Wizard of Speed and Time is a film created by Mike Jitlov and released in 1988. The film took five years to create and is based on a three minute "special effects" demo reel that Jitlov created in 1977 while trying to get a job at Disney Studios. The film is a critique of film and effects industry at the time. It could also be read as an extended "special effects" demonstration with narrative elements. The Wizard of Speed and Time was produced on a low budget and has qualities of both traditional feature film production and "do it yourself" aesthetic. The film did poorly in theaters but has gained a cult following over time due to it's VHS and Laserdisc releases.

We will screen a youtube version of the film during today's work session. As we continue to explore video production and visual effects (which have grown from earlier special effects), there are alot of interesting gems within the film. In particular, there is a lot that we can learn from Jitlov's approach to production where one might create an effect with whatever tools they have available to them.
