Class 6 - Feb 08

Note On In-Class Work Time

As outlined in the Course Syllabus, our class time is designed as an opportunity for us to work together. Participation includes more than just attending class and the amount of points awarded per class will also reflect how class time is used. It is expected that some of our work, production in particular, will require us to go beyond our computer lab. However, work time during class should be used to work on coursework. Using our computer lab and video studio will allow us to work together and also afford the instructor the ability to see what you are doing and offer assistance or feedback as necessary. As further clarification, a student will not receive all possible points for a class session if the instructor does not see them working or know what they are doing during a work session.

Process Demonstration

Processes that will be introduced:

  • Video Layers
  • Opacity
  • Keyframing Basic Properties
  • Looping &/OR Repeating
  • Color Matte (Layer Solid)
  • Blending Modes
  • Effects:
    • Flip Horizontal/Vertical
    • Blur
    • Brightness & Contrast
    • Hue Saturation Lightness (Color Balance)
    • Tint

The demonstration will be geared towards the footage we have been shooting and developing for the current video assignment. Considering that our work for the BG Plates Assignment has been to shoot practical motion effects, it is also useful to consider how we might use effects and layers to further enhance the visual image. The outcome will be abstract in nature and that gives us more freedom to experiment and develop interesting video sequences for use as backgrounds or for compositing.

Work Session: Assignment 2 BG Plates Video

The remainder of the class session will be devoted to production and post-production for the BG Plates Assignment. Students may work in the digital video/photo studio and our computer lab. As you develop your video for this assignment, remember that you will need to have a minimum of 3 different BG plates. Those videos will be compiled into one video reel and that is what will be submitted. The submitted assignment videos will be screened and discussed at the beginning of class during Class 7.

Aesthetic Considerations:

  • Color
  • Composition within video frame
  • Movement and Time
  • Unique or interesting visual quality
  • Abstract appearance
  • Blending Modes
