Class 5 - Feb 06

Reviewing Video Assignment 1: Montage

All videos should be submitted on D2L prior to the beginning of class for Assignment 1. After videos are collected, we will begin reviewing and discussing the work. We should focus our attention on the technical concerns we were addressing:

BG Plates Video Shoot

Our work this week will be focused on creating video footage that is somewhat abstract in nature. We will be using our cameras and studio to set up a form of "practical effects" shoot. In visual effects, practical effects refer to things that are done with physical objects and materials that are shot in camera to be added to or composited with other footage. An example of a practical effect would be using a puppet that is controlled by people to play the role of Yoda in Star Wars as opposed to creating a digital or computer generated character.

We will move in small groups to the digital video/photo studio. A brief demonstration for some practical effects processes will be given. For these practical motion effects, we will be focusing our attention on how to shoot something in camera that can be used as a background plate. That means we will be using lights and a variety of objects that are manipulated in a controlled setting. A tutorial is assigned for the week that demonstrates a very similar process and work flow.

Following the quick introduction to shooting processes, some post-production processes will also be introduced:

Background Plates Video Assignment

Assignment description and requirements are on the Assignment 2 page. You may shoot and edit footage during Class 5 and Class 6. During your work on this assignment, you may work in small groups but each person is responsible for their own video to submit. You will likely be working back and forth between our computer lab an dthe digital video/photo studio. All footage should be shot new for this assignment and then modified and manipulated in editing or post/production/.
